Everyone Builds

Personal background to the Age of the Builder series. Written before the research, and left in its own voice.
Like most people, I enjoy building things.
As children, we build sandcastles on beaches, dens in living rooms, bands in garages (even if we only know three chords), and new worlds in video games. This comes from a place of innate curiosity and creativity. According to cognitive researchers, humans bring new things into the world in active relation with tools and one another. This deepens understanding about how the inherently social process of teaching and learning works.
At some point, barriers to building emerge. And rightly so sometimes. The broad consensus is that we should have physicists building particle colliders and structural engineers signing off bridges. Similarly, programming is the pre-requisite for software development.
